Dr Quentin Shaw: Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers

Dr Quentin Shaw, Director and Specialist Dam Engineer at ARQ Pty Ltd recently added to his achievements by being admitted as Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

He is also the Chairman of SANCOLD and serves as South Africa’s representative on the ICOLD Concrete Dams Committee. He is also Lead Author for the new ICOLD Bulletin on RCC dams.

ARQ Structures in Local News

This initiative saw a distinctive new feature being added to the Pretoria landscape on Saturday. A series of massive beams was installed by a special crane to create a new bridge on Lynnwood Road. The bridge forms part of the new Javett Art Centre at the university (the Javett-UP), creating a link between the Hatfield and south campuses. This bridge signals another step in the establishment of the Javett-UP, due for completion by the end of 2018.

2017 ICOLD Annual Meeting and Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic

ARQ Consulting Engineers was represented at the ICOLD Annual Meeting and Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic from 3 to 7 July Dr Quentin Shaw, Messrs David Cameron-Ellis and Henry-John Wright. 2017 FULTON AWARDS – EC Branch – Mndwaka Dam

The Mndwaka Dam is a classic example of how a relatively simple construction method such as Rubble Masonry Construction can provide vital water infrastructure to remote rural areas. This RMC multiple arch-buttress dam provides domestic water supply to 63 rural villages. Its height of almost 30 m and its RMC volume of approximately 30 000 m3 makes Mndwaka Dam the highest and largest RMC dam of this type yet constructed in southern Africa.
