ARQ Consulting Engineers was represented at the ICOLD Annual Meeting and Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic from 3 to 7 July Dr Quentin Shaw, Messrs David Cameron-Ellis and Henry-John Wright.

The following paper was published by Dr Shaw as part of the symposium proceedings, as was also one of the few papers presented during the symposium:

  • The influence of early stress-relaxation creep on the design of large RCC dams.

ARQ is also the respective South African members on the ICOLD Technical Committees, who participates actively in the completion on technical bulletins:

  • Committee C: Hydraulics for Dams- Henry-John Wright;
  • Committee D: Concrete Dams – Quentin Shaw; and
  • Committee P: Cemented Material Dams – David Cameron-Ellis.

As the involvement of young engineers in the dam engineering profession is a priority for ARQ, Henry-John forms part of the ICOLD Young Engineering Forum (YEF).

The ARQ team visited the Vrchlice (concrete arch dam) and Parižov  Dams (gravity masonry dam more than 100 years old) as part of a one day technical tour.
