Bruma Bridge
South Africa
The old pedestrian suspension bridge over the Bruma Lake was in a serious state of disrepair. It was so badly corroded that it needed to be closed to the public. Under the project where the old problematic Bruma lake was removed and the Jukskei River was reinstated it was decided to keep the bridge and carry out repairs.
ARQ was appointed by Basil Read the contractor to do the detailed design. As it turned out the bridge was virtually replaced completely. The deck and handrails where so badly corroded that they could not be repaired. The old cables and hangers were also damaged and needed to be replaced. The only thing that remained from the old bridge are the foundations and the towers.
