The existing Rustenburg Interchange on the N4 freeway needed to be upgraded due to the high volumes of traffic.  Originally the bridge was a single span bridge passing over a single carriageway of the N4. For the upgrade a two carriageway road needed be provided over the N4 and the bridges had to allow for the future doubling of the N4. Basically one and a half bridges need to be built.

Construction of the bridge needed to be done over traffic and this was done using a mega girder system. The deck also needed to be built at a higher level (some 500mm higher) and was lowered using a jacking system.
