Dr. Henry-John Wright’s 20 years of post-graduate engineering experience has focused mainly on the design of dams. His experience extends from planning through to construction implementation. He has been extensively involved in the design and construction of large dams, spillway hydraulics, dam safety inspections and small hydropower schemes.

He has worked on numerous dam types, including earthfill, RCC, RMC, arch and conventional concrete dams. He has been responsible for the hydraulic model testing of various dam spillways. In addition, he has completed a number of dam safety inspections for small and medium sized dams. Henry-John has been involved in several small hydropower projects, with a specific emphasis on reconnaissance and bankable feasibility studies. He further has experience in contract administration, site supervision and project management. He was also full time on site during the construction of an 82 m high RCC dam and the concrete spillway extension of a 30 m high earthfill dam.

Henry-John is currently a Specialist Dam Engineer and Director in the Dams and Hydro division at ARQ. To date he has published over 15 technical papers on dam and hydropower engineering. Henry-John serves presently on the Management Committee of the South African National Committee on Large Dams (SANCOLD). He also serves as South Africa’s representative on the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) Hydraulics for Dams Committee
