Ryan is a structural dam engineer with fourteen years of post-graduate experience in design and construction of concrete and earthfill structures. He specialises in structural design and evaluation of dams and related structures. He has a master’s degree in civil engineering and is registered as a professional engineer with ECSA. Ryan has worked extensively on various dams ranging from 4 m to 275 m in height. His field of interest involves using advanced numerical modelling techniques to analyse the structural behaviour of dams and develop practical and efficient solutions to complex engineering problems.
Ryan is proficient in developing state-of-the-art finite element models of dams with complex loading and foundation conditions. Typical complex problems comprise the analysis and design of large concrete dams subject to thermally induced stress loads and seismic earthquake loads. Ryan is the South African representative for ICOLD Technical Committee A – Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams. Ryan is also part of the Midas FEA expert network.
Ryan has authored and co-authored over 20 technical papers on dam engineering in South African and international publications.
Ryan also has 3 years’ experience in the civil engineering construction industry. He has worked on heavy civil projects such as power stations, mine smelters and bridges and held the position of Site Agent. Ryan also holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce specialising in accounting sciences.
